Here we see Lord Shiva sitting on a tiger skin, in half lotus, a meditation posture. Shiva is a one of the Trinity, the others being Brahma and Vishnu. Brahma is the God of Creation, Vishnu of Protection and Shiva of Destruction.
There are many symbols associated with Shiva. The tiger is the vehicle of Shakti, the Goddess of power and force. Shiva wearing or sitting on a tiger skin shows that there is no force he cannot conquer. Tiger also represents lust, again overcome by Shiva.
Shiva's half-open eyes indicate that the cycle of the Universe is in process. When they are completely closed, the Universe has dissolved and when they completely open, a new cycle has begun.
Shiva's third eye is the eye of wisdom. He can search for and find evil anywhere in order to destroy it.
Shiva is usually shown with his Trident - this symbolises his three fundamental powers will, action and knowledge.

Due to the nature of the hand printing techniques used in India, there may be natural variations in design and some double printing may occur, however this does not detract from the beautiful finish of this batik.
